Course description

Learn how to make steam bent shaker boxes with our woodwork courses in Sydney!

This is a five-day course for students who wish to develop their skills in woodturning.

Your teacher, Simon discusses the basics of spindle turning and bowl turning. You’ll have your own lathe and plenty of hands-on time to work on various projects.

The skills taught will include turning between centres, using faceplates, and how to turn a bowl, lidded box and platter. Tools used will consist of both traditional turning chisels and carbide turning chisels.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Turn a basic V cut and bead with a skew chisel
  • Turn a basic candlestick between centres with beads and coves
  • Safely mount timber into a chuck or onto a faceplate cutting a tenon
  • Turn a Spinning Top using skills learnt from the candlestick and adding new turning skills
  • Adding colour and texture to turning
  • Mounting a blank onto either a chuck or faceplate for open-face turning
  • Turning using bowl gouges along with scrapers
  • Sanding techniques for bowls
  • Finishing

  • Basics of woodturning techniques with emphasis on safety
  • Individual lathes provided for practical learning and project work
  • Turning between centres, using faceplates, and shaping bowls, lidded boxes, and platters
  • Use of traditional and carbide turning chisels for diverse applications

Intended audience

Who is this woodwork course for?

Suitable for beginners with no experience up to intermediate students. Children 14+ are welcome to participate in this course.

Please note, we require a parent or guardian to be on the premises for the duration of the class if a minor is attending.

This venue is within walking distance from Sydenham station (600m).

Course materials

Materials provided

  • PPE will be supplied however students wishing to bring their own should come with a face mask, safety glasses or goggles and earmuffs or earplugs
  • Closed shoes are a mandatory requirement for all students
  • Those with their own turning chisels should also bring them along to get better accustomed at using them but we also supply all tools if you don’t have any

We have a kitchen onsite with fridge and microwave for those that want to bring their own food, and there are also takeaway options within walking distance.

Additional information

Please note the following:

  • Please be advised that classes held by Timberbits do not permit class credit, transfers, or refunds for any enrolments.
  • Meal breaks – Lunch will be from 12:30pm to 1:30pm. You will need to bring your own lunch. We have a fridge and freezer to store your food as well as a microwave and kettle if required.
  • Please ensure you will be able to attend all sessions of the course. If you miss one or more sessions, it will become quite difficult to catch up and learn the skills safely.
  • Please don't wear your best clothing
  • Please don't wear any jewellery
  • If you have long hair, please tie it back
  • Wear closed-in shoes
