Course description

Carve spoons using seasoned timber with our woodwork short courses in Sydney!

This is a one-day workshop for students who wish to learn how to carve spoons from seasoned timber.

From learning how to prepare your materials, and carving out the bowl of the spoon to shaping the back and handle of the spoon blank.

Included are detailed instructions on how to use a Carving Gouge, Hook Knife, Sloyd Knife and finishing techniques.

Suitable for beginners with no experience up to intermediate students. Children 14+ are welcome to participate in this course.

Please note, we require a parent or guardian to be on the premises for the duration of the class if a minor is attending.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this woodcarving course, you should have

  • attained the skills needed to carve spoons from seasoned timber
  • learned the process of preparing materials for carving, ensuring suitability and proper handling of seasoned timber
  • learned to carve the spoon's bowl
  • acquired skills in shaping the back and handle of the spoon blank, focusing on design and functionality
  • been introduced to finishing techniques to refine the carved spoons, achieving a polished appearance
  • some spoons to take home

Course content

What will be covered in this woodcarving course?

  • Overview of the spoon carving process, safety protocols and the importance of proper techniques
  • Selecting, handling, and preparing seasoned timber for carving
  • Hands-on practice on carving the bowl of the spoon
  • Training on the effective use of Carving Gouge, Hook Knife, and Sloyd Knife
  • Instruction on finishing touches, including smoothing, sanding, and polishing, to enhance the visual appeal and texture of the carved spoons

Who is this woodcarving course for?

Suitable for beginners with no experience up to intermediate students. Children 14+ are welcome to participate in this course.

Please note, we require a parent or guardian to be on the premises for the duration of the class if a minor is attending.

This venue is within walking distance from Sydenham station (600m).

Class Materials

Please bring these recommended tools:

PPE will be supplied however students wishing to bring their own should come with a face mask, safety glasses or goggles and earmuffs or earplugs.

Closed shoes are a mandatory requirement for all students.

Those with their own wood carving tools should also bring them along to get better accustomed at using them but we also supply all tools if you don’t have any.

We have a kitchen onsite with fridge and microwave for those that want to bring their own food, and there are also takeaway options within walking distance.

Requirements and Safety

  • You are encouraged to bring your own facemask, protective eyewear and ear protection however sanitised Personal Protective Equipment will be available.
  • You are required to wear closed-toe shoes.
  • Aprons will be provided but please wear clothing that can get dirty (e.g. sawdust or glue).
  • Long hair needs to be tied back and no loose hanging jewellery should be worn.
  • For your own safety, facilitator instructions regarding the correct use of tools and equipment must be followed at all times.
  • Any people thought to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol will not be able to take part in the workshop.

Please note the following:

  • Please be advised that classes held by Timberbits do not permit class credit, transfers, or refunds for any enrolments.
  • Meal breaks – Lunch will be from 12:30pm to 1:30pm. You will need to bring your own lunch. We have a fridge and freezer to store your food as well as a microwave and kettle if required.
  • Please ensure you will be able to attend all sessions of the course. If you miss one or more sessions, it will become quite difficult to catch up and learn the skills safely.
  • Please don't wear your best clothing
  • Please don't wear any jewellery
  • If you have long hair, please tie it back
  • Wear closed-in shoes
