Email is one of the fundamental internet technologies, a tool used by nearly every person with an internet connection. It allows you to – at no cost – send a letter of unlimited length to one person or many people at once. It arrives almost instantly, and they can reply straight away. Setting up your own email account will allow you to communicate with people you know in ways you never thought possible.
This introduction to email course is designed for complete beginners, even those without an email account, as well as those who do use email at a basic level but want to know about other features.
You will learn what you need to get set up and how to use it. This course gives you the tools to use email for corresponding online with friends, family, and businesses safely. Is email different from webmail? What is an email browser? How do I save attachments I’ve received in an email? How do I attach documents to send to others? How do I send one email to multiple recipients easily? The experienced tutor uses simple relatable language and you will do simple exercises that will build your confidence.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this introduction to email course, you should have learned:
- The basic layout, functions & facilities available in email programs
- The difference between webmail and desktop email browser programs and how to use them
- Email etiquette and formatting
- How to send group emails
- How to send attachments and save any sent to you
- How to deal with unsolicited emails & to recognise scam emails.

The Tech Seniors program is for seniors aged 60 years and above who have little or no experience in using technology.

Course materials
What to bring to class
Our computer room has both Apple and Windows computers. We suggest you bring:
- Notepad and pen
- Details of passwords for your devices, email address if you have one, and any other login passwords, etc
- A list of any specific questions you may have
- You are welcome to bring your own laptop, tablet, and smartphone to use. You can connect to the internet through the College Wi-Fi. If you don’t know how, we will show you!
