In this course, you can choose between crafting a one-of-a-kind masterpiece for kiln firing or alternatively, you can choose to produce multiple replicas through the transformative mould-making process. The choice is yours. With moulds crafted from clay, plaster, silicone or latex, you can realise your vision by selecting the most suitable casting material for your desired outcome.

Please note: Raku clay and casting plaster are provided by SCC. If you wish to work with latex or silicone, this will need to be purchased by the student after discussing the requirements with your teacher on the first night. Please speak with the tutor in class regarding options for kiln firing your sculpture.

  • Understanding the relationship between subject matter, the dynamics of form, proportion and the correct choice of materials.
  • Model and construct in clay
  • Construct a sculpture in preparation for firing, or
  • Make a mould from clay, latex, silicone or plaster or your sculpture
  • Cast into the mould

 Regardless of your previous experience level or if you are a beginner, this course provides valuable insights and practical techniques to help you grow as an artist.

Course materials

What to bring to class

  • Two large garbage bags to cover your work
  • Any clay working tools you may have
  • P2 dust mask for working with plaster
  • Any ideas you have for a sculpture
  • Pencil and paper

What we provide:

  • One slab of hand-building clay
  • Casting plaster
  • The use of classroom sculpting tools

Depending on your project, additional materials may be required and will be discussed at the first session (may cost between $20 - $100).
