Learn Philosophy in Sydney in this seven-week short course designed to teach you the fundamental problems of Philosophy with a focus on the topic of the nature of human existence. This philosophy course will help you understand the key features of the mind and its relation to the body, it considers the nature of consciousness, the unconscious and free will. It will set out the basic elements which compose the human being.

This Philosophy short course will also deal with the question of whether human beings are ultimately nothing but bodies, or whether the mind is part of a non–physical aspect of being human, such as the soul. Turning then to an examination of the nature of life itself, especially the theory of evolution of human life. This also leads to an examination of the nature of death and the meaning that death has in philosophical literature.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this philosophy course, you should be able to:

  • Gain insights into the nature of human
  • Consider the nature of the human person in relation to consciousness and free will
  • Understand the relationships between human persons and how they contribute to our general concept of the human being.

What will be covered in this philosophy course?

Week 1

The mystery of human nature, especially the operations of self-consciousness, free will and the biological body

Week 2

The nature of the Mind as self-consciousness, the unconscious and the free will

Week 3

To what extent is human nature determined by external forces and to what extent are we the product of our Free Will actions.

Week 4

Is the mind nothing but part of the body? Is the mind part of a non-physical aspect of humans such as our self-consciousness and free will?

Week 5

What is life? The complex dimensions of human life and the theory of evolution

Week 6

The fact, the meaning and the trauma of death

Week 7

What happens after we die. Is there life after death?
