This hands-on workshop introduces the foundational skills of soldering and brazing with a focus on electronics repair and small-scale metal joining. Participants will learn how to solder circuit boards, repair broken wires, and explore brazing for structural and creative applications. No prior experience is required.  

Learning outcomes

By the end of this soldering and brazing workshop, you should have :

  • Understand the key differences between soldering and brazing
  • Safely operate soldering irons and brazing torches
  • Apply basic soldering techniques to wires and circuit boards
  • Identify and resolve common soldering issues in electronics
  • Perform introductory brazing for small-scale repairs or fabrication
  • Complete a small soldered or brazed project to take home

Course content

What will be covered in this soldering and brazing workshop course? 

Module 1: Welcome, Safety & Soldering Fundamentals

  • Safety briefing: ventilation, PPE, and fire precautions
  • Overview of soldering vs brazing: temperature, materials, uses
  • Introduction to tools: soldering iron, flux, solder types, torches

Module 2: Soldering for Electronics & Repairs

  • Preparing surfaces and components (cleaning, tinning, flux)
  • Hands-on: soldering wires and joining small components
  • Learn to solder a basic circuit board: resistors, LEDs, connectors
  • Common mistakes in PCB soldering and how to fix them

Module 3: Introduction to Brazing & Structural Joins

  • What is brazing and when is it used?
  • Torch types, flame control, filler rod selection
  • Practice brazing: joining small copper or brass pieces
  • Applications in light repair, brackets, or creative metalwork

Module 4: Finishing & Functional Projects

  • Desoldering techniques and fixing poor joints
  • Cleaning and inspecting work (continuity testing, visual inspection)
  • Complete a simple electronics-based take-home item (e.g. blinking LED badge or USB lamp frame)

Materials Provided:

All essential materials and tools are provided for this course, including copper and brass stock, solder, flux, circuit boards, and wire. You'll also have access to soldering irons, hand tools, torches, and safety gear to ensure a safe and practical learning experience.
