Learning to swim as an adult can feel daunting — but it doesn’t have to be. Living in a harbour city like Sydney, with its beaches, ocean pools and waterways, being confident in the water can make a real difference to how you enjoy your surroundings.
Our adult swimming lessons are designed to help you build confidence and practical swimming skills at your own pace, in a supportive and respectful environment. Join Sydney Community College for small-group lessons created specifically for adults, where the focus is on steady progress, clear instruction and feeling comfortable in the water.
Whether you’ve never learnt to swim, feel uneasy in deep water, or want to improve your basic freestyle technique, this course provides a safe and encouraging way to develop essential swimming and water safety skills — so you can feel more confident making the most of Sydney’s coastal lifestyle.

By the end of this Learn to Swim course, you should have:
- Increased your confidence and comfort in the water
- Become familiar with both shallow and deeper water
- Learnt to swim freestyle for short distances in shallow and deep water
- Practised essential water safety skills, including floating and treading water
After completing this course, you may wish to continue your swimming journey with Swimming Lessons: Stroke Development.
What will be covered in this Learn to Swim course?
- Moving through the water using a kickboard
- Breathing techniques for swimming
- Developing arm technique and coordinating stroke, kick, and breathing
- Assisted floating on your back
- Swimming freestyle for distances of up to 20 metres
- Increasing freestyle distance with controlled breathing and rest breaks
- Swimming longer distances without rests
- Treading water
- Becoming comfortable swimming in deeper water (approximately 1.5–2.0 metres)
This course is suitable for:
- Adult beginners who are new to swimming
- Adults who can swim a little but lack confidence or technique
- Anyone wanting to improve their basic freestyle and water safety skills
No prior swimming experience is required.
Please bring:
- Swimsuit
- Swim cap
- Goggles
- Towel
- Sunscreen (for daytime classes)
- A copy of your enrolment confirmation
Please note:
- Participants must be 18 years or over
- Course fees do not include pool entry
- Classes will proceed in poor weather and will only be cancelled in the event of an electrical storm or pool closure. Enrolled students will be notified of any cancellations
- All sport and fitness classes involve physical activity. You must inform the tutor of any injury, medical condition, or physical limitation that may affect your participation or safety
- For safety reasons, participants must arrive before the published course start time. Late arrivals may not be admitted, as sessions often begin with essential OH&S briefings and warm-ups
