DIY Pergola Workshop

This one-day course combines theory, practical application, and interactive engagement to cover the essentials of building a pergola. Participants will leave with the confidence and skills to plan and construct their own pergola safely and effectively. The workshop includes instructor-led theory, live demonstrations, and hands-on exercises.

Planning & Preparation
- Measuring and marking out your pergola area.
- Understanding load requirements and local regulations.
- Preparing the site: clearing, leveling, and setting out.
- Activity: Participants plan and mark out a mock pergola layout.
Building the Frame
- Cutting and assembling posts and beams.
- Fixing supports for stability.
- Checking for level and square alignment.
- Activity: Participants assemble a small pergola frame section.
Installing Rafters & Crossbeams
- Correct spacing and alignment for rafters.
- Fastening techniques for timber and metal pergolas.
- Avoiding common mistakes like sagging and misalignment.
- Activity: Participants install rafters and crossbeams on their frame section.
Finishing Touches
- Sanding and sealing for durability.
- Tips for maintenance and long-term care.
- Activity: Participants apply a finish to their pergola section.

- Common pergola issues and how to prevent them.
- Professional tips for a polished look.

Course materials
What to bring to class
- PPE: safety goggles, gloves. You may bring your own or use those provided.
- Lunch (or purchase from nearby cafes).
- Wear old clothes, closed-in shoes, and tie back long hair.
- Avoid jewellery and loose accessories.
All major tools and materials are provided. You’ll gain hands-on experience using pergola construction tools in a safe and supportive environment.

Please note the following:
- Wear old clothes you don’t mind getting dirty
- Preferably wear a hat or cap
- If you have long hair, please tie it back
- Closed-in shoes are required—no sandals or heels
- Please do not wear necklaces or bracelets
